It doesn’t really matter where we do our engagement session… Right?!
WRONG!
Maybe you don’t think it’s a big deal, but I think the location of your engagement session matters very much.
Does it really make that much of a difference?
So many couples ask me this.
And my answer is, “yes!” I think it makes a very big difference. The location of your engagement session matters.
And I believe every couple should put a little thought into where they decide to do their e-session. Here are some questions to ask yourself before deciding on a location for your engagement session:
1. Will this location give me the ultimate look that I want in my photos?
Do you love a very neutral look with clean lines and blank space? Then choosing a dense forest may not be the best location for the look you’re trying to achieve. If you want something more nature-oriented then a city-scape is probably not going to be the best location. If you want to be comfy and cozy in some sweatpants and a tee then heading out Hartwood Acres Mansion may not match that vibe.
And it’s okay. This is YOUR Engagement session and you should get the look you want!
But the engagement session location does matter.
First, you need to decide what style you’re going for. Do you want to get dressed up and have a formal session? Or would you prefer to keep it low-key and comfy?
Does low-key and comfy sound more ideal for you and your loved one? Then do that! Put on your comfiest sweats and your favorite tee and hang out together in the kitchen or snuggle up in a blanket on your sofa!
If you decide you want to get dressed up and have a more formal session, then make it a night out on the town! Head into the city for beautiful photos with lots of neutral tones and clean lines.
The columns at the Mellon Institute of Industrial Research in downtown Pittsburgh is a beautiful spot to create images with those tones and lines!
Brooklyn Bridge Park in Dumbo, Brooklyn is another beautiful location with gorgeous views of New York City and the Brooklyn Bridge.
Love being outdoors? Stay dressed up and head out to a beautiful field at sunset or put on your tennis shoes and take a hike together and let your photographer capture the two of you among nature!
Coopers Rock State Park is a beautiful location to find nature trails and breathtaking views of WV.
2. Is there a location that is meaningful or matters to the two of you?
Deciding to have your session at a location that is meaningful to you can really tug on the heartstrings. Perhaps you decide to visit the location of your first date or your first kiss or where your loved one asked you to marry them.
Locations like these can bring out some truly, beautiful emotions in the two of you, and I, for one, love to capture raw, genuine moments like that for my couples. Those moments create some of the most breathtaking images, in my opinion.
Jarred & Megan met in New Orleans and fell in love. Heading into the Garden district to capture their photos was extra special for them.
3. Is there something fun that the two of you love doing together?
Do the two of you love to enjoy a cup of coffee together? Or how about craft beers? Ice cream? Sporting events?
If you absolutely love going to baseball games together, then put on your ball caps and let’s go to your favorite stadium for some fun images of the two of you. Does an ice-cold, draft beer sound more appealing? Let’s head to the brewery and have some fun! If ice cream or coffee is more your thing, let’s head to a local creamery or coffee shop.
Chris & Carrie had the best time at Black and White Coffee & Ice Cream!
Devin & Merci enjoyed a hot latte and one another at Starbucks!
The bottom line?
This session is about YOU and your fiance! So do what the two of you love! Wherever and whatever that might be. No matter what you decide, I know we’ll have fun together and create some fun, romantic images of the two of you!
